I’ve had a bit of an interest in truisms lately. And by a bit of an interest, I mean a tiny little insignificant obsession. Ok, maybe a large-ish obsession. But it’s fine. I promise.

I’m fascinated by the idea of a “an undoubted or self-evident truth”. Truth for who? I can’t imagine that everyone everywhere agrees with any single statement, no matter how true it may be for someone else.

Here are some of the truisms I’ve collected. Please share your own or comment on those that you especially agree/disagree with? —> Jenny Holzer is kind of a big deal in the truism world.

And then, from a girl in my Aesthetics class last quarter:

But isn’t it true that an author can write only about himself?
Come closer. Come into this. Come closer
Dance, dance, dance and go crazy)
Don’t be afraid of straining your brains. They won’t break.
Everything was beautiful, and nothing hurt
(Fucking for fear of not wanting to fear again)
Given a choice between grief and nothing, I’d choose grief
Happiness lies outside yourself, it’s achieved through interacting with others
“I” is someone else
If you’re looking for infinity, just close your eyes
(Infinity’s hourglass will measure all, measure all)
(It all will fall, fall right into place)
(It’s hard to make the good things last)
(Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine)
(Keep it clean and no one’s ever won)
Likes and dislikes have nothing to do with it
(Lonely is all we are)
Love is not dependency or sex, but friendship since friendship is based on respect
(Make a point to make no sense)
Metaphors are not to be trifled with. A single metaphor can give birth to love
Never fall in love with an idea. They’re whores.
No matter how we scorn it, kitsch is an integral part of the human condition
Our society is not a community, but merely a collection of isolated family units
Physical love is unthinkable without violence
Punishing people who don’t know what they’re done is barbaric
Rock out like you get paid to disturb the peace
Rock out like you got pants full of tokens and nothing to do but everything
Rock out like the stereo’s volume knob is the figure 8 of infinity instead of merely numbers
Shake the dust
Speak every time you stand so that you do not forget yourself
There are some things in life that are worth holding on to
Think of what a paradise this world would be if men were kind and wise
(This love is only gonna break your heart)
Truth had run through my fingers, every drop had escaped
We can never know what to want, because, living only one life, we can neither compare it nor perfect it in our lives to come
We’re not afraid of lacking
When you scream, there’s the chance you’ll find comfort in the echo
Write it all down
You’ll be a slave the rest of your life unless you bite the apple
Your body is yours, take it

Even the ones that I don’t necessarily agree with, I love. That may just be me though, words make me giddy. Hope you enjoy, lots of love!
